Over three fun-filled days, join 200+ other recreation enthusiasts in presentations, hands-on workshops, networking breakouts, lightning talks, and excursions, and the Outdoor Rec Trek!
The Summit kicks off Tuesday afternoon with the Outdoor Rec Trek and Welcome Party.

On Day Two, we’ll hit the ground running with expert keynotes during breakfast and specialized breakout sessions all morning, followed by outdoor excursions in the afternoon, and concluding with a happy hour and beach bonfire.
This isn’t a “sit and stare” conference. We prioritize hands-on learning and outdoor sessions. Plus, you’ll have the chance to earn Continuing Education Units (CEUs) through the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) and the Maryland Recreation and Parks Association (MRPA).

We’ll finish strong with a few more excursions, keynotes, and sessions.

Breakout Session Track - Recreation with Purpose: Stewardship and Sustainability
Every outdoor recreation community talks about stewardship, but few have a real strategy for it. This facilitated workshop introduces a practical framework built around four key levers: Education, Enforcement, Engineering, and Engagement. Participants will assess where their community or organization currently stands, identify gaps and barriers, and prioritize next steps and partnerships. Participants will leave with a stewardship strategy for their community and a clear picture of what is achievable and could make the biggest difference for their destination's long-term sustainability.

A conflict is a crisis in communication, and the "friends and foes" of trail development within our communities can be fertile breeding grounds for such a crisis. Conflict Mapping is a structured way to understand why people resist a trail project, what their concerns actually are, and how those concerns relate to one another. This tool is relationship-centered, visual and designed for real-world community disputes.

“What hiking trail should I bring my kids to?” “Where’s the closest pier to go crabbing?” “We have a few hours - what should we do?”
These are the questions visitors ask when they arrive in Maryland. To turn these moments into repeat visits and economic growth, we must equip our community with the right knowledge and tools. When travelers seek outdoor adventure, they ask front-line hospitality staff or search online for trusted, local voices.
In this interactive session, we detail how to turn front-line staff and local influencers into powerful economic drivers. First, we will break down the strategy behind Visit Hagerstown's new Tourism Ambassador Program, focusing on how training builds staff pride in their own communities and in turn, deepens the visitor’s experience. Then, we’ll showcase DelmarvaTrailsandWaterways.com. Born as a passion project, the site has evolved over several years into a trusted hyper-local influencer to inspire travel, and functions as a centralized, user-friendly tool that both front-line staff and visitors can use to easily explore the Eastern Shore’s outdoor assets.
Join us to learn how to adapt these strategies in your own region, while navigating the critical balance of promoting and protecting hidden gems.

Receiving a grant is an important milestone—but it is only the first step toward creating lasting community impact. Sustainable outdoor equity initiatives require more than funding; they depend on strong partnerships, organizational capacity, meaningful community engagement, and the ability to demonstrate measurable social impact.
In this interactive session, Cleveland Consulting LLC and Rising Routes will share lessons learned from supporting grassroots organizations, affinity groups, and community leaders across multiple states. Drawing on the Love Your Block coaching model, outdoor equity grant implementation, state grantmaking experience, and field-based research, presenters will explore how funding structures can either accelerate or unintentionally limit community-led innovation. Participants will examine what distinguishes organizations that successfully move beyond a single grant cycle by building civic infrastructure, collecting meaningful impact data, cultivating strategic partnerships, and developing sustainable funding strategies.
The session concludes with a facilitated brainstorming workshop where attendees will map their own funding ecosystem, identify gaps in organizational capacity, and generate practical next steps for strengthening partnerships, documenting community impact, and positioning their organizations for long-term sustainability.

The Eastern Shore of Maryland has a long history of frequent fire on the landscape. In addition to natural fire, cultural burning by indigenous peoples kept forests open, navigable, and healthy. Because of the frequent fire, many of the native species here on the Shore are either fire-adapted or fire-dependent. Today, agencies and landowners utilize prescribed fire to meet landscape-wide stewardship objectives such as timber management and wildlife conservation. Meeting these stewardship objectives has the added benefit of enhancing recreation opportunities such as hunting, birding, and nature appreciation.

Finding funding is about more than identifying an open grant—it is about understanding which opportunities align with your project, organization, and community goals. This interactive session gives attendees direct access to representatives from public agencies, foundations, and other funding organizations supporting outdoor recreation, conservation, environmental stewardship, trails, community development, and related initiatives across Maryland.
Following a brief introduction to participating funders and their funding priorities, attendees will “speed date” with funders stationed throughout the room. Participants can ask questions, explore eligibility requirements, discuss potential projects, and learn what funders look for in strong applicants.
Attendees are encouraged to explore both immediate and future funding opportunities, make new connections, and consider how their projects may align with funding sources they have not previously considered. Participants will leave with new relationships, resources, and a clearer understanding of potential next steps for funding their work.

Deeply Rooted Outdoor Education
We kick off the final day of the Summit with a Plenary presentation by Brianna Amingwa — known to many as Ranger Bri. A former leader with the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service and founder of Deeply Rooted Outdoor Education, Ranger Bri brings over a decade of experience breaking down barriers and building inclusive access to outdoor recreation for communities that had long been left out of it.
Outdoor spaces are for everyone, but not everyone feels that way. Access to outdoor recreation is far from equal, and a number of realities shape who feels at home outside. So many people try an outdoor experience once and never return, and the reasons why are rarely about the trail or the water. They're about whether a person walked away feeling like that space was truly theirs to come back to. For tourism and conservation leaders alike, this gap is both a challenge and an opportunity.
This session invites all of us to look honestly at our own connection to nature and how it quietly shapes the way we design, lead, and communicate outdoor experiences. Building lasting engagement starts with those of us who create these experiences becoming more intentional about how we do it. Attendees will depart with a clearer sense of what culturally responsive outdoor engagement actually looks like in practice, a sharper eye for their own blind spots, and language and strategies ready to put to work the moment they get home. This is a call to make sure the next person's first time outside isn't their last.

As we cruise the waters, we will explore current conservation efforts in the area, discuss the rich local culture and heritage, and experience the bayside ecosystem of Assateague Island National Seashore. Participants will get the opportunity to step ashore on Assateague to take in its beauty and engage in some birding and fish seining.
